The banking details seem to be causing confusion with Gatskop entrants and members paying their yearly subs. This is in part due to the a number of zeros before the account numbers on the info form, and has now been updated. The account detail is as follows:

Bulwer Fly-Away 16-28 August 2010

Informal Fly-Away

Dylan and I will be in Bulwer from the 16 to 28th August 2010. We will have a double cab with a recovery driver on site most of the time and depending on numbers, we are willing to assist pilots.

Airtickets
The last time I checked, a flight with 1Time was about R350 one way.

Accommodation
Wildsky Paragliding – Rates range from R100 (Backpackers lodge) to R150(Log Cabin en-suite) per person, per night. Camping is R40 per person. For more details : Wildsky Paragliding

Nip Inn rates are R125 per person for cabins and R 45 for camping. Phone Shane Dixon on 039 8320267 for details.

Flying sites
There are at least 6 sites within easy driving of Bulwer. A flying site for every wind direction. We have been to Bulwer for the last 3 winters and found the flying conditions great. Last year we did 28 flights in 14 days with our best height gains of 950m above take off.

Recovery
We will have a double cab with a recovery driver on site most of the time and depending on numbers, we are willing to assist pilots.

So for those of you who can steal a Friday and Monday away from work, you are welcome to join us for a long weekend or more.

Hi All

As Ross has posted before, the highly anticipated, annual Overberg Gatskop event will take place on 22-24 October at Porterville (Pampoenfontein). We are hoping that this year’s event will be an even greater success than last year. To help make that possible we need sponsorships of prizes to be given out at the usual MASSIVE party taking place the Saturday evening, probably at the same place we used last year.

Any prizes are welcome eg. wine, gift vouchers, paragliding equipment, promotional caps, bags, complimentary tandem flights etc..

APPEAL TO SENIOR PILOTS, INSTRUCTORS AND CLUB SAFETY OFFICERS

We have entered spring, which as we are all aware, poses higher accident risks.

Request:

Please sacrifice some of your valuable flying time where possible to guide lesser experienced pilots on safe flying practices, such as:

v Taking care of flying during the warmest part of the day – especially at non-coastal, ‘dry’ sites. The increased occurrence of collapse thermic conditions and whirl winds during spring pose increased risks close to mountains, when taking-off and landing.

v Being aware of the mountain in thermic conditions. A strong thermal can cause the wind to change its direction and cause rotor in unexpected areas along the ridge.

v Avoiding top landings during the middle of the day at thermic sites.

v Pre-judging flying conditions carefully and avoid flying when it is ‘gusty’.

v Beware of flying in changeable wind conditions.

v If in doubt, rather fly earlier in the day and/or later in the afternoon; inexperienced pilots should stay well clear of the mountain in rough/thermic conditions.

v Remember pre-flight checks, including the glider and wind

v In general the rule is: “if there’s DOUBT, there’s NO DOUBT”

v Spending time looking at what is there to see, for the sake of safety and the other pilots flying the site with you – an accident spoils the day for everybody.

v Be aware of the possibility of increased turbulence and buoyancy close to ground around mid-day which can cause you to mis-judge landings.

v Importance of “active flying” at all times.

v Avoidance of tight turns on the landing approach.

v If not sure, consult a senior pilot.

SA WINELANDS PARAGLIDING OPEN 2009

Dear SAHPA member,

SA WINELANDS PARAGLIDING OPEN 2009

We welcome all pilots to join us at the SA Winelands Paragliding Open (FAI CAT II) to be held from the 13^th to the 19^th December 2009 near Porterville (1 ½ hour’s drive from Cape Town). Those of you who have flown there before will know how fantastic the conditions are in December for fast technical tasks, with thermal strengths seldom below 2m/sec.

This year the competition will be held 2.4km south (32° 55.610s – 19° 2.216e) of the old Dasklip take-off at Pampoenfontein that is larger and higher with two take-off positions to reduce the chances of congestion and allow all pilots to be ready for Start.

Treat yourself to a great holiday starting with the SA Winelands Paragliding Open and go on to enjoy all that the South African Winelands area has to offer.

OVERBERG HAS FLYAWAY

I’ll repeat that just in case you think you’re dreaming … get the calender out … red ink the following:

Weekend friday 14 and saturday 15 March

so this coming weekend do as you please, the same for the next, the one after that, however, you should be making tracks northwards out of town …. that’s the weekend after the argus … 1,2,3 weekends time … gettit!!

PAMPOENFONTEIN

Why …. well it’s last of the summer thermals time … the Christmas party is overdue … the forecast (ahem) looks perfect …

It’s about time we got it together to go and fly together and Porterville at the end of summer is magic …

Wayne and I are going to be flying tandem with any new xc pilots who want to know something about the swartland sky … hopefully some other tandems will join the party … Stef, Barry, Craig, Graham, Colin ????? … and some of our wise old pilots will be thermal
marking!!!

Pampoen (or eselsfontein as the oldies fondly remember it – prob is its name) … is a great site to launch from .. is higher than Dasklip and site fees are included in our accommodation …

ACCOMMODATION

I’ve provisionally booked the 3 cottages at Pampoenfontein …. please book your place with me … if you book you are liable for the
funds … whether you go or not … there’s loads to do up there even if it’s not flyable … mountain biking, climbing, hiking, swimming in rock pools at Beaverlac etc …

1 double bed in room, 2 singles
R385 per night (R770 for le weekend)

PROTEA COTTAGE (the stone house)
1 double, 2 singles + single sofa bed + double sofa bed
R450 per night (R900 for le weekend)

PELARGONIUM COTTAGE (the wooden house)
total of 8 singles (one’s a sofa bed)

Additional people will be at R80 pppn … are some camp beds etc available.

Reckon it’ll be cool to come make braaivleis, talk kuk, drink fruit juice cocktails, become acquainted with the bokkie and the
renoster … and then fly lekker …. loads of people means loads of vehicles means loads of retrieve!!!!…

We’ve got new pilots and old pilots … time we mingled once more …. aye!! … the snowman might even be back for this.
